The Many Types Of Lawn Mowers

Whether you’re a new home owner or you’re just looking for a replacement for an old mower, when you start shopping for new lawn mowers, you’ll be faced with a lot of choices. Riding mowers, push behind, even manual rotary mowers - they’re all valid choices. Let’s look at how to choose the right one for your needs.

The biggest factor in this decision is the amount of space you’re going to be covering. If you’ve got a large yard with a lot of grass, a riding mower might be a good option. The latest zero turn models make it easy to get around corners and into tighter spots, but it’s a lot less work than pushing a mower around the entire yard. However, if your yard is smaller, a riding mower can actually be more work than a standard gas or electric mower.

Another choice you’ll have to make is whether to go gas or electric. Electric lawn mowers tend to require less maintenance, and they’re certainly easier to start, but they’re limited by the length of the extension cord and they’re generally not as powerful as a gas mower. Again, part of the decision here is how much space you have to cover, but it will also come down to how long your grass gets between cuts. A gas mower will handle longer grass better than an electric one.

When buying a lawn mower, it’s a good idea to do a bit of research first, and check the ratings and reviews both on the internet and in magazines like Consumer Reports. This can help you avoid the brands and models that tend to have a lot of problems, saving you a lot of time and hassle down the road.

As well as your lawn mower, you’ll probably be buying other yard and garden tools such as leaf blowers, tillers and hedge trimmers. A lot of the same decisions apply when buying these tools - the size of the job, whether to go gas or electric and what model or brand to buy.

Spending a little extra time before you buy will help to ensure you get the maximum life out of your tools and accessories.

I switched from gas to an electric mower a couple of years ago and I don't think I could go back. It's SO much easier to start and much less messy. I have a small yard, mind you, so I don't know how I'd like it if I had more lawn to cut.

Lindy, the trouble is Amazon doesn't carry a lot of the brands of lawn mowers that I've seen. There must be some other site that has some good information on it with a bit bigger selection.

I'm with Chi - Amazon is a great place to find reviews and ratings. And it's mostly from people who actually used the stuff, so it's more reliable than a lot of other places.

Reel mowers? Holy cow, I didn't know they still made those. I remember my Dad had one when I was a kid, but it pretty much sat in the tool shed and never got used after the first couple of tries :-)

I love my reel mower. It's more work but I really feel like I accomplished something after I'm done. These self-propelled gas and electric mowers do all the work for you.

Lawn mowers are like cars - some people just want the most powerful model they can get for bragging rights. It reminds me of Tim in the old Home Improvement show sometimes.

Man, I bought a cordless mower a couple of years ago and I don't think I could go back to a regular electric one or a gas powered mower. It's just so easy to pull it out, cut the lawn and stash it away again.

I checked out all the lawn mowers I was thinking about buying on sites like Amazon before I decided. The reviews there really helped me find out which ones were having a lot of problems.

By Mark Daymond
Traditionally, the main method of mowing your lawn has been with a gas powered lawn mower. It is a machine that has served the test of time and performs the job well.
